Eternal Love Through Death in John Keats Bright Star Essay Example for Free
Eternal Love Through Death in John Keats Bright Star Essay Love, being one of the most debated topics in literature, often serves as a source of inspirations for many of writers and poets, including John Keats. Throughout his life, he wrote countless love poems and letters, addressing his lover ââ¬â Fanny Brawne. The star, apart from being the symbol of steadfastness and constancy, it is also a metaphor representing Keats himself. Through Keatsââ¬â¢ idea of ââ¬Å"Mansion of lifeâ⬠, the poem is consisted of two floors where the first floor displays his passionate love for Brawne while the second floor talks about his inner desire for death. Keats first expresses his ideal, however paradoxical love. There are two essential yet conflicting qualities in this poem ââ¬â the reality verses the ideal and the immortal verses the mortal. On one hand, he would like to be like a star, steadfast and unchanging. On the other, he dislikes the solitude of the star as it has to watch ââ¬Å"the moving watersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the new soft-fallen mask/Of snowâ⬠from afar like a ââ¬Å"sleepless Eremiteâ⬠. He continues to state that if he ââ¬Å"has to live everâ⬠, he would rather ââ¬Å"pillowââ¬â¢d upon my fair loveââ¬â¢s ripening breastâ⬠. The ideas to be eternal and to love simultaneously do not go hand in hand. To love, one has to be human and therefore not an immortal, steadfast star. In the last line of the poem, Keats acknowledges that he would like to ââ¬Å"live everâ⬠in love, but he has to be human in order to experience love, which hints that the love between Keats and Brawne will not last and will eventually fade away as time goes by. The other possible alternative to immortalize their love is ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠. One of Keatsââ¬â¢ letters from 3 May 1818 to Fanny Brawne echoes the idea of ââ¬Å"swooningâ⬠and it says ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I love you; all I can bring you is a swooning admiration of your Beauty.â⬠(Poet.org) This can be interpreted that he wants to die while experiencing intense, ecstatic love or according to the letter, overwhelmed by her beauty. While I was reading Bright Star, I could not help but catch the similarity between Keats and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s idea of love. In the opening of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sonnet 116, ââ¬Å"Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments. Love is not love Which alters when it alteration finds, Or bends with the remover to remove: O no! it is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worthââ¬â¢s unknown, although his height be taken.â⬠(Shakespeare) Shakespeare talks about his ideal love and marriage. Keats, being a reader of Shakespeare, is in some way affected or inspired by him. Shakespeare describes love as an ââ¬Å"ever-fixed marksâ⬠that ââ¬Å"is never shakenâ⬠even in the wildest storms. Keats transformed Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"ever-fixedâ⬠into steadfastness. Keats then moves on to talk about a more sexual and sensuous love. With more explicit descriptions of ââ¬Å"my [his] fair loveââ¬â¢sâ⬠body parts, those descriptions hint the idea of sex and orgasm. He imagines himself ââ¬Å"pilliowââ¬â¢d upon my fair loveââ¬â¢s ripening breastâ⬠. The word ââ¬Å"ripeningâ⬠gives a notion of youth, implicating that the lady is young and energetic. Keats also describes the rising and falling of her chest when she takes her ââ¬Å"tender-taken breathâ⬠. If he could, he would ââ¬Å"so live everâ⬠. However, it is impossible to live forever and the only solution would be ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠. Keats did not explicitly tell the readers what it means to be ââ¬Å"swoon to deathâ⬠and leave us a lot of room for imaginations. The word ââ¬Å"swoonâ⬠and other erotic images of the ladyââ¬â¢s body parts bring us to the subtext of the poem ââ¬â sex. La petite mort is a French idiom or euphemism for org asm, meaning little death. According to Oxford Dictionaries, ââ¬Å"swoonâ⬠means ââ¬Å"to enter a state of ecstasy or raptureâ⬠. Whether he intended to talk about sex at the end of the poem is still indefinable as we have no idea of what Keats was thinking when he wrote the poem. Though Keats did not write any overly sexual poetry, there is always a strong erotic indication in many of his works. If the sexual subtext is intended in the poem, I believe that it creates a nice denouement to the poem. Keatsââ¬â¢ obsession with death and his love for Fanny are intertwined seamlessly throughout the poem. In one of his letters, he states ââ¬Å"I have two luxuries to brood over in my walks, your loveliness and the hour of my deathâ⬠(Poet.org). Not only is Keats intimidated by death, to some extent he is also intrigued by it. Even though he is worried about the approaching death, to him the promise of death is comforting and soothing. The only resolution to achieve the paradoxical ideal of being eternal as well as experiencing love is death. Through death, immutability and steadfastness can be achieved. Keats has seen many people died in his lifetime. His father died when he was eight; his mother died from tuberculosis when he was 14; his brother Tom died also from tuberculosis when he was 19. Along with his familyââ¬â¢s deaths, he has also seen a lot of patients died as he was also a medical student. Therefore, constantly seeing people die in a way reminds him of the tran sience and the mutability of life. There are some religious references in the second quatrain of the poem. All these references, other than conveying the loneliness and the solitude of the star, also illustrate his longing for the promising death. The poem was written in 1819, the same year when Keats contracted with tuberculosis. The word ââ¬Å"ablutionâ⬠is heavily loaded with connotations, both religion and about death. From the Oxford Dictionary, ââ¬Å"ablutionâ⬠refers to the washing or cleansing of the bodyâ⬠. In Christianity, there are different forms of ablution and one of them is the preparation before the burial of a dead person. Here Keats is hinting that his death is near and the priest will cleans his body after his death with ââ¬Å"the moving watersâ⬠. Further Keats also mentions the ââ¬Å"soft-fallen mask/Of snowâ⬠in the following two lines. Seasons always act as symbols of different stages of human life in literature. Spring refers to birth or new beginning; summer means m aturity; autumn represents old age while winter symbolizes death. In line 7-8, with ââ¬Å"the mountains and moorsâ⬠covered in snow, such explicit image suggests that death is approaching. Though death is coming, Keats is not browbeaten. Yet, he is fascinated with death as it helps him to accomplish the co-existence of eternity and love. Bright Star is a poem that can be read on many different levels. To me, the poem is not merely a declaration of his ardent love for Fanny Brawne. It is also an expressive lyric poem addressing his awe as well as obsession with death. The main themes of the poem are smoothly woven together and this showcases Keatsââ¬â¢ expressiveness and his wit. Works Cited Keats, John. Bright Star. n.d. Oxford Dictionaies. Mind-body Distinction :: essays research papers
ââ¬Å"Mind-Body distinctionâ⬠We usually view the mind as the brain and body as something physical. The mind may be better known and understood when one is thinking. When thinking, the mind is made up purely of thoughts and the body is an extension. The mind is telling the body what to do. The mind is a mental entity and the brain itself is the physical body. Although one can not have a mind with out a brain, the mind and brain differ in which one is mental and the other physical. Together the mind and body are like a foundation. Empirically we know that the mind needs a brain to exist, but the mind is not a physical substance. Moreover, a brain sits useless unless it has a mind. Substances with shape, mass, and other physical properties characterize the physical. In contrast, substances without any size, shape, mass often characterize the mental. One of the first things about our bodies is that they have limitations that we may think are not there. Our bodies seem to be what they are no matter what we think about them. Although you can change your body by changing your body image, you can never become the ideal person you think you can be. Thus, our bodies seem to exist and be what they are independently from what any mind thinks they are. Are bodies are physical and can not be changed because we can see them change in our mind. The body can be controlled by the mind to do certain things but the mind can not change our physical appearance. The main characteristic of the mind is the ability to think. A mind does more than take in information from the world and react to it. The mind has hopes, feelings, and beliefs. It is aware of the world and has feelings and thoughts about the information that it takes in from the world. Minds are non-physical and the thoughts it produces do not have anything in common with the physical. We can see, touch, or hear our thoughts. An idea can exist, but only in the mind. An idea has no physical properties to it. Physical objects can be perceived in the mind but objects in the mind are immaterial.

Free Narrative Essays - Canoeing :: Personal Narrative Essays
Canoeing: A to Z We were practicing methods of paddling Ruth Elvedt discusses in her book, Canoeing: A to Z. We did the side stroke, which pulls the canoe sideways. We did the back stroke, which makes the canoe reverse course. We also did the classic forward stroke to go forward. We became quite proficient in the art of spinning the canoe around in circles from combining the methods Ms. Elvedt discusses in her book. The numerous people who were floating close by laughed at us and called us idiots because of our unique practice of paddling. We interviewed Rich's uncle, Earl Keys, who claims to have floated The Current over a hundred times, prior to our departure for the river. He had warned us when we questioned him about his numerous float trips down Current River to be extremely careful when we came to a fast moving bend in the river called Wallace's Point. He said, "Wallace's Point is lined with so many root wads (root wads are clumps of tree stumps, roots, branches, leaves, and whatever else might float down the river) along the banks, and it has so many sunken canoes and sunken logs along it's main channel that safe passage through it is impossible - unless you stick to the right side of the bend." As we neared the end of a long straight away in the river, I noticed the speed of the water was increasing exponentially. A look farther down the river told me what I had been dreading this whole trip now lay before us, and we were going into Wallace's Point from the wrong side of the river! "Rich! Back-right stroke! Back-right stroke! Hurry! Don't you see that we're going in the wrong way? BACK-RIGHT STROKE!" I bellowed as a rush of excitement and worry hit me. "Hey, take it easy man. We can do this. We'll just paddle like crazy to the other side. Got it?" was Rich's unusually calm reply to my maniacal outburst. So we both put our backs into it and made it to the other side of the river; however, before we knew it we were moving faster than most people can run, and steering the canoe was becoming very

Air Masses and Fronts
Air Masses and Fronts Air masses is every where around us, it creates pressure around our body and keeps us from floating. Air mass is the pressure in the gravity that also has to the temperature in the atmosphere to create different pressure that effects you in different ways. For example, if hot air were to fill a plastic bag it would rise, but if it where cool air that filled the bag it would be less likely to rise than the other. Fronts, on another hand, are produced when a large amount of cool winds go east and a front of hot air would go west and hit they will create an enormous storm that is most likely to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms. Fronts also have to do with the pressure that is in the atmosphere. Advection is when a large amount of warm moist air current of that goes over a cold body of water of land. Air masses are the differences of the hot air and cold air that come in through different parts of the world and make what are storms that cause many damages. There are a couple of types of air masses that create most of the bodies of winds that collide into each other and sometimes make surging tornadoes. The collision of these air masses usually create many of the worst storms that usually occur in the mid-east. There are also the massive rain storms that have lightning and there are also the tornados that make the wind gust. Fronts are when massive air currents collide, but it usually occurs when it is a cold and hot current that meet. They hit and make a storm that creates a rain that make thunder storms and other natural storms. These front travel cross country to be crashed into another one half way across the nation. They would be produces in one place on the west of the united states and travel eastward to confront another front. Advection is fog or mist of condensed clouds of water vapor in the form ice droplets or ice crystals, suspended above in the atmosphere just over the surface of the earth. In heavy populated city the Advection fog gets mixed with the car emissions and gasses from factories to make it a brownish color. There are four types Advection, Radiation, Upslope, and Precipitation fog. In this essay I learned the different types of Advection fogs there were and how it got mixed with the gas emissions. I also learned that a front are the ones that create huge storms in the center of the United States. Finally I learned the differences in the air masses and there temperature.

Materialism in America essays
Materialism in America essays We are all materialistic, to one extent or another; but what are our motives when we pursue our materialism? Are we working towards happiness in our lives? Are we letting materialism become the most important part of our lives? Are there any emotional aspects of too much materialism? Through the American philosophy we learn that America is and has always been obsessed with material possessions. What is materialism? Materialism is the tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values. Lets face the facts; materialism is a major part of the world we live in, this is shown in the quote, "Materialism is fundamentally a doctrine concerning the character of the concrete natural world we inhabit" (Campbell). This explains that materialism is very important in the world we live in; so important that it is considered a doctrine of one's character. Keith Campbell shows that the more extreme materialistic individuals believe that the entire world is material when he says, "Extreme materialism asserts the real world is spaciotemporal and consists of material and nothing else" (Campbell). The world is nothing but an empty space consisting of material objects. Materialism is very important in the world we live in, and history shows that it always has been. Materialism has always been an important aspect in America's history, dating all the way back from the 18th century to the modern era. During the 18th century, the Age of Enlightenment sparked up. The Enlightenment was Mankind's final coming of age, the emancipation of the human consciousness from an immature state of ignorance and error and the idea of materialism became very intriguing. The quote that best shows this would be, "One important movement in American philosophy during the 18th century was the importance of materialism, or the belief that all essential reality and phenomena are caused by physical matter" ("American Philosophy...

7 Agenda Items for Your Writing Groups First Meeting
7 Agenda Items for Your Writing Groups First Meeting 7 Agenda Items for Your Writing Groupââ¬â¢s First Meeting 7 Agenda Items for Your Writing Groupââ¬â¢s First Meeting By Mark Nichol This is the third post on our series about writing groups. You can read the first one here and the second one here. Now, youââ¬â¢ve done it. Youââ¬â¢ve launched a writing group, or youââ¬â¢re about to. What now? Itââ¬â¢s time to organize. Hereââ¬â¢s what to do at the first meeting: 1. Break the Ice Give each member a few minutes to introduce themselves, or try the team-building game Two Truths and a Lie: Have members come prepared to present, with a straight face, three interesting things about them; everyone else votes on which two items are true and which is false (though it can be a variation on the truth or an aspiration). 2. Set a Schedule How often will the group meet? Every week is probably pushing it, so vote on whether sessions will be held every two weeks or monthly. Agree on meeting duration. (Two hours is a good block of time.) Ask members to commit to attending regularly and arriving punctually. 3. Establish Goals What do you and the other members want to get out of the group? Is everyone determined to get published, or is the experience just a way to solicit feedback in a supportive environment and work on writing skills? Make sure everyone has a common ambition. Consider creating a mission statement. 4. Determine Protocol Briefly discuss meeting structure: Does everyone read every time, or do members alternate every two or three meetings? Do members email work in progress in advance so that others can prepare critiques, or do they give cold readings? Will your group alternate between both strategies? Consider having members take turns preparing mini-tutorials based on their experiences or research, like describing the different archetypal characters or sharing a list of plot pitfalls. Or give each person a chance to share an advice tidbit from an accomplished author. 5. Take a Break Allow five or ten minutes halfway through the session for a snack and small talk, but donââ¬â¢t let it drag out. 6. Read Samples Give everyone a chance to read briefly from a work in progress. Have members start right off without a preface and then take a moment to talk about the story. Save critiques for subsequent sessions this is just a chance for everyone to get a taste of othersââ¬â¢ writing styles. 7. Plan Ahead Agree on what to do next time: Have everyone email an excerpt to the group a week before the next session, prepare a short selection to read aloud, or plan to bring hard copies of a sample passage to hand out. (Materials for cold readings by writers or others should be no more than a couple of pages; excerpts sent in advance can be longer). Decide what the focus will be each time: crafting an opening scene, establishing character, etc. Focus on technical aspects for a while before delving into content. What are the implications of the beheading of Charles Research Proposal
What are the implications of the beheading of Charles - Research Proposal Example The conflict that ensured from the existence of these centers of power therefore, presented a threat to what the rule through divine right or great chain of being that the monarch alluded as the basis of the existence of their authority. One of the greatest implications of the beheading of king Charles in 1649 is that the action went against the great chain of being which creates the social hierarchy necessary for maintenance of social order. The great chain of being hypotheses has the king on top of a hierarchy also includes gentlemen and peasants in that order. Given that the England was a kingdom that had historically followed the absolutism form of rule; Charles as the king was facing great opposition from the parliament over his desire to use unlimited power in performance of his functions. The events leading up to the beheading is characterized by about ten years of civil strife and warfare with the King and the Long Parliament on opposing sides of the confrontation. The confrontation was over a litany of issues linked to the prerogatives of the King and the extent to which the constitutional parliament limited exercises certain powers and privileges1. Arguments on the basis of the great chain of being seek to assert the legitimacy of the king and his right to exercise powers over the people of the kingdom. The nobility during that time was a family perceived as appointed by God to rule over the rest in the kingdom and therefore had divine right to undertake their functions. Although Charles was not the first born in the family, the death of his elder brother meant that he was rightly the next in line to ascend to the kingdom. The legitimacy of the king therefore means the English civil war and the consequent defeat of the King Charles by the Parliamentarians (or the roundheads) led by Oliver Cromwell implies direct disregard of the hierarchy which had worked over the years to create

Housing policy - Essay Example From the graphical representation, it is noticed that US real estate business was highly affected due to the financial crisis. What originated as a crisis in the US housing and mortgage markets; had infected other sectors and spread globally. The financial troubles that the worldwide economies face today came on the heels of two bubbles, one in the housing market and the other one in the credit markets. A plethora of several dissimilar factors added to the housing market bubble and also those tangled with the credit market bubble. The inflating of the housing bubble can be considered by home sales and home prices. Housing sales and prices had been rising at a quick speed since the early-mid 1990s, until the recession began in 2006 - 2007. Several household transactions indices have turned down from 10 % to 30 % worldwide and by as much as 40% or further in certain markets. Still the additional reserved losses in household worth turn out to be more important when an individual believes how household procurement is financed. Since housing sector is extremely leveraged, a preliminary 20% equity stake in a household, acquired over the most recent years have been in all possibility wiped out. Therefore, the perception that household ownership is a better source of revenue of wealth gathering has been a thoroughly misleading thought (Bardhan & Et. Development and underdevelopmint issues of measurment and defintion Research Paper
Development and underdevelopmint issues of measurment and defintion - Research Paper Example The concept of Human Development Index (HDI) is also covered in order to guide the developing countries on the essential factors that they should consider during the measurement of human development. The macroeconomics and microeconomics challenges that are faced by the developing countries have jeopardized the provision of basic services including education and health. Due to the lack of adequate resources as a result of inadequate technology and innovation, developing countries have continued to rely heavily on developed states both in terms of financial resources and human capital. Even though the financial assistance has reasonably addressed the economic challenges faced by the developing countries, the amount of international debts has gone up leading to more economic problems especially during economic crisis. Some of the major macroeconomics problems faced by the developing countries include high rate of unemployment, high taxes, decreased production of goods, poor infrastructure as well as misappropriation of financial resources among others. This paper seeks to discuss development and underdevelopment issues that affect developing countries Economics development entails the study of macroeconomics and microeconomics factors that leads to an economic growth. Other aspects that are covered when analyzing the economic development of a developing country include education, health and the conditions of the work places among other issues (Frans, 2002). In addition, economics development involves establishment of methods and policies that a developing country should adopt in order to increase the national economic output. The policies that are adopted both at the domestic and international levels, may involve qualitative and quantitative approaches. One of the major aspects that are essential in economic development as compared to other fields of economics is that it incorporates both political and social factors that affect the lives of

History - Essay Example They were also against the reforms that were legislated by the state because they had a preference for individual freedom by choice. They majorly favored agricultural farms and independence in the rural areas and the right to ownership of slaves. Their agenda at this time was rapid expansion in territories whether by purchase or war. Their main focus was to progress by external growth. On the other hand during the 1840s period was the Whigs. They too had their political interests. Contrary to the democrats, the Whigs were a party of modernization. They looked into the needs of the future. Their main interest was the hope of the people of America. They strategized the use of federal state governments to spear head the growth of the nation especially the transport and banking sector. (Holt, 30) writes that they facilitated reforms in public schools, prisons and temperance. As opposed to the democrats, they favored free labor, industrial and urban growth. They were opposed to war and favored gradual expansion of territories as opposed to the democrats who favored rapid expansion of territories through conquering and purchase. The candidate that was chosen to run for 1844 elections was called James Birney. He only managed to win 2% of the total votes but managed to get most of the votes from the northern part which was majorly Whig dominated. On the other hand of the opposing party, were the non-abolitionists who opposed the expansion territorial conquering. This party won in 1848 with 10% of the popular vote. Martin Van Buren was the party candidate. However in 1852 they lost half percentage of their support because their candidate had rejected the compromise made in 1850. In 1860, the democratsââ¬â¢ party split when they were defeated in a defending platform concerning slavery. The convention was held in Charleston, South Carolina. (Holt, 34) points out
New World slave societies Essay Example for Free
New World slave societies Essay Coercion and abuse experienced by enslaved people in New World slave societies have tended to focus on violence. This is how it should be because experiencing or witnessing violence was indeed an everyday part of life for slaves. Violence inflicted by slave holders on enslaved people did not take place in a vacuum. It was also meet with and often proceeded by abusive words. Yet while debates around negotiation, slave resistance and paternalism focus in detail on the cultural and discursive context of these relationships, discussions of violence tend to home in on their purely physical aspects. I will be discussing the context of violence in a society undergoing the transition from slavery to a post slave society in the West Indies. Abusive language was sometimes used in place of physical punishment and served as a substitute for personal violence in situations where physical punishment was not allowed. A period known as the apprenticeship period in Jamaica, 1834-38 slaveholders lost the legal right to directly punish their un-free workers so instead used abusive language. But fear is fear whether it is felt physically or verbally the threat was still present. The people of the West Indies today are mainly of African decent. Important minorities are East Indians, mainly Trinidad, Chinese and Europeans of British, French, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese. There are also many people of mixed blood and racial and cultural mixtures that makes the West Indies one of the more cosmopolitan areas of the world. The most important industry in the past and in the present day is the growing of sugar cane. Other crops include citrus fruit, bananas, spices, coca, coffee, tobacco and coconuts. All of these are agricultural and very labor intensive. The British colonialization of the West Indies brought slavery into the social context. Toussaint Lââ¬â¢ouverture led a successful revolt in Haiti. The efforts of Englishmen like William Wilberforce helped bring an end to the slave trade to the New World and eventually led to the emancipation of slaves in British colonies. When European countries began their overseas explorations and colonization in the 15th century, the institution of slavery experienced a revolution. The discovery of the West Indies opened a new era. In every colony prosperity depended upon the production of some article which could be profitably exported, such as coffee, sugar and indigo. These crops called for large scale operations and cheap labor. Wage laborers were not available and it was necessary to resort to some type of compulsion to secure workers. The Indian appeared to be the obvious answer, utilized the institutions of tributary labor and repartimiento, the granting of land along with the Indians living on it. The Indians proved unsuitable for forced labor. They died off rapidly under oppression and even resorted to mass suicide and infanticide. Their number declined to the point of extinction. The Europeans turned to the African as a solution to their labor problems. The African was not unknown to Europeans prior to the 15th century, but there were very few Africans in Europe. The Portuguese exploring the Atlantic coast of Africa brought back two African slaves and subsequent expeditions resulted in the purchase or capture of other slaves. At this time Portugal faced a manpower shortage and African slaves proved to be the solution to its problems. By 1460, 700 to 800 were being imported annually. Spain soon followed the example of Portugal and adopted the importation of African slaves. It was not surprising that the colonists in the New World should have thought of the African slave when they needed labor.

Declining Trade And Investment Barriers Economics Essay
Declining Trade And Investment Barriers Economics Essay The environment in which international business operates has become subject to the forces of globalisation and increasing world integration. One might even say that globalisation is the buzzword of economics today. There are many varying definitions of globalisation, some including cultural and political aspects but for the purpose of this manual, it is best to focus on the economic aspects of it. Globalisation, it is argued, is a shift towards a more integrated and interdependent world economy. Furthermore, at a very simple level, one may distinguish between two broad aspects of globalisation. 1.2.1 Globalisation of Markets It could have been argued that in the past, one could distinguish between many different national markets. However, globalisation of markets has caused moves towards a single homogeneous global market whereby consumer preferences are converging towards a global norm. One of the strong proponents of such an argument was Levitt (1983) who argued that companies needed to view the world as a single homogeneous, global market for products and services. A global firm should therefore view the world as a single unit and must strive to produce and market standardized product worldwide. Nevertheless, the firm is also expected to adjust its product offerings for local differentiation. The benefits from global standardization have enormous potential since firms are able to achieve economies of scale in many value-chain activities including production, distribution and managementà [1]à . However, whilst there are indeed many common market needs, demands and acceptance of certain global products, there are also many deep divisions, cultural and other national differences between countries and markets. At the simplest level, these differences relate to differences in product use. For example, in some countries like for instance in Continental Europe, people drive on the right hand side whilst in South Africa or Mauritius for example, people drive on the left hand side. Hence, vehicle specifications to that end will be differentà [2]à . 1.2.2 Globalisation of Production This refers to the sources of goods and services from locations around the world to take advantage of national differences in the cost and quality of factors of production. Globalisation of production is characterized by increased dispersion of value chain activities to different world locations. Instead of all business activities being singly concentrated, firms may choose to disperse some of their business activities to other locations. For example, production may be undertaken in certain developing countries where labour is cheap; research and development in another location where high-level specialized skills are in abundance; and assembly may be performed at yet another location for ease of transport to world markets. As such, firms may exploit national differences in factor conditions such as land, labour, capital and skills, as well as demand conditions, infrastructure and government regulations. 1.3 DRIVERS OF GLOBALISATION Hill (2005) identifies the following factors that underlie the trend towards greater globalisation: 1. Declining Trade and Investment Barriers After the Great Depression and the Second World War, developed countries have opted to remove barriers to international trade and foreign direct investment. This resulted in the GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). There were a number of rounds of negotiations between countries which ensued and these led to further reductions and also extended GATT to cover services, intellectual property rights and eventually to the establishment of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) following the Uruguay Round in 1994. The WTO is a permanent body that is responsible for establishing and further entrenching rule based trade and for managing the rule based world-trading system (Hill, 2003). These developments have contributed to the reduction of trade and investment barriers and lower restrictions on capital flow. These have in turn facilitated the globalisation of markets and production. In addition to reducing trade barriers, many countries have also been progressively removing restrictions to foreign direct investment that has further boosted world trade growth. However, whether the removal of those barriers to trade is a good thing is a debatable issue. Many developing countries would argue that given their intrinsically different economic underpinnings, it will be almost impossible for them to compete on a level playing field as is propounded by globalisation. They have further advanced that these barriers or protectionist measures are extremely important in that they provide in most cases a market for the developing countries exports. 2. Technology Over the last decades there has been significant technological advancement. The microprocessor revolution is perhaps the one that has had the most significant impact. Microprocessors are the underlying components that have fuelled the advancement in global communications. These include satellite, optic fibre and wireless communications as well as the computing revolution that has borne the Internet, the worldwide web and provided the possibilities of e-commerce. These technological developments have contributed to the globalisation of markets and production, through better communication, and integration of worldwide activities. It has also facilitated the speedy global transfer of funds and capital, which further fuels globalisation. Other technological advancements that have contributed to globalisation include that of jet travel and containerization. Jet travel has enabled the rapid and widespread movement of people and goods across national borders (Hill, 2003). This has facilitated the setting up of new businesses, partnerships and negotiations across borders and has also helped in the co-ordination and integration of worldwide business activities. 3. Changing World Order The fall of communism in the late 1980s has led to moves away towards democratization of countries in Eastern Europe and the former Central Asian Republics. Many of the former Iron Curtain Countries are more amenable to free market policies which are in turn conducive to globalisation. Thus, it can be argued that a shift in political ideology towards capitalism has been an important determinant of globalisation. 4. Convergence of Industrialisation Strategy Towards An Export Oriented Platform To the classical economists, trade was seen as an engine of growth as it facilitated the exploitation of comparative advantage. But, by the 1950s, it was obvious trade was not having the expected propulsive effects because of imperfections in international trading systems, such as oligopolistic competition, discriminatory pricing, product differentiation and high tariff barriers. As a result, many nations adopted an import-substitutionà [3]à strategy in a bid to reduce their import dependency. Import-substitution strategy entailed a high level of protection, via tariffs, import restriction measures and quotas, which discriminated against exports via explicit and implicit tax of export activities and an overvalued foreign exchange rate. Also, the government used investment license, differential taxes, tax holidays, exemptions and remissions to influence resource allocation between industries and sectors. The proponents of IS strategy firmly believed that they would be able to meet the domestic demand for manufacturing products; provide employment opportunities for skilled labour; ease pressure on the balance of payment and strengthen the long term productive capacity of the economy by importing the production technology via foreign firmsà [4]à and by using the infant industry argument. However, the overwhelming consensus is that IS was a failureà [5]à . IS strategy has turned out to be self-defeating since it has resulted in huge increases in imports of equipment and inputs while transfer pricing constituted a severe drain on foreign exchange. Also, IS granted excessive protection to industries producing inefficiently non-essential goods for high-income elite. Furthermore, fiscal credit and exchange rate policies, coupled with subsidies on imports of capital goods, made it possible and advantageous to entrepreneurs to rely on high capital intensive equipment produced abroad and technology unsuited to the factor proportions prevailing in less developed countries. As a result, a new orthodoxy emerged in the late 60s and early 70s which stressed the role of exports of labour intensive manufactures as an engine of growth. This represented a return to the static theory of comparative advantage with trade based upon different factor proportions prevailing in various countries which meant that the pendulum turned full swing for development policy in LDCs from import substitution to manufactured exports. Export oriented strategy not only encourages free tradeà [6]à , but also the free movement of capital, labour, enterprises and an open system of communication. It also entailed more efficient allocation of resources with firms competing internationallyà [7]à based on their relative comparative advantages. These considerations, coupled with the emergence of trade blocks, were factors motivating changes in the strategic orientation of MNEs. MNEs underwent a complete restructuring of their global and regional supply profiles. This entailed locatingà [8]à manufacturing operations in only a few countries but exporting for a wider market. Each subsidiary were opened to a fully competitive market situation which permitted the realisation of economies of scale and the attainment of optimal efficiency in production (Pearce, 1999). The where to produce clearly gained in prominence during such an era which led to MNEs redistributing their unchanged ownership advantages in order to create an international network of subsidiariesà [9]à which optimised their supply of established range of products. Thus, investments undertaken by MNEs were mainly of an efficiency-seeking nature. 5. Emergence of Regional Trade Blocks Members to a regional initiative have to work towards a reduction or complete harmonization of their tariffs. Such a step taken by these members (most of which are signatories to the WTO) is seen as a partial liberalization initiative and is the first step towards complete liberalization which is propounded by the WTO. 1.4 ADVANTAGES OF GLOBALISATION Faster Growth Economies that have in the past been open to foreign direct investment have developed at a much quicker pace than those economies closed to such investment. E.g. China as opposed to Russia. Cheaper Imports This is simply because the reduction of barriers to entry such as tariffs on imports will lead to a fall in price. New Technologies Developing countries, more receptive to FDI, have a greater chance of acquiring new and better technologies through diffusion and spillover effects. Spur of Foreign Competition Foreign competition will encourage domestic producers to increase efficiency. Increased Investment Opportunities Companies can move capital to countries that offer the most attractive investment opportunities. This prevents capital being trapped in domestic economies and earning poor returns. 1.5 DISADVANTAGES OF GLOBALISATION Culture The protection of its own culture through subsidies and grants may be a major hold back of globalisation. Local focus or Localisation Douthwaite (1996) believes that globalisation can and should be reversed. He argues that localization is the way to do this. He calls for a balance between local, regional, national and international markets since this would curb the control given to multinationals. He also argues that governments should work together to reduce the power of multinationals by negotiating new trade and treaties that would remove the subsidies powering globalisation and give local production a chance. Loss of jobs in developed economies Because of increased competition as a result of globalisation, firms are increasingly shifting their production plants to cheaper locations to reduce costs. This has led to an increase in the level of unskilled unemployment. Loss of Sovereignty Many anti-globalisation campaigners argue that countries are increasingly losing their sovereignty and powers to implement local decisions because of the powers provided to the WTO. Technology Although it is one of the most important drivers of globalisation, technology has nevertheless widened the poverty gap. Developing and less developing countries inability to adopt new technologies entails that they are unable to compete against their developed countries counterparts. EXERCISE Please insert case study entitled Globalisation: Boon or Bane 1.7 SUMMARY Globalisation of markets has caused moves towards a single homogeneous global market whereby consumer preferences are converging towards a global norm. One of the strong proponents of such an argument was Levitt (1983) who argued that companies needed to view the world as a single homogeneous, global market for products and services. It could be argued that the following factors could be considered as the main drivers of globalisation: technology, changing world order and the dismantling of barriers to trade, convergence of industrialization strategy and the emergence of RTAs. Some of the main advantages of globalisation are namely faster growth, cheaper imports, new technologies, spur of foreign competition and increased investment opportunities. Some of the negative consequences of globalisation are loss of sovereignty, loss of jobs in developed countries and a widening poverty gap. SUGGESTED READINGS Hill, C.W.L. Concept Of Self Essay -- essays research papers
Within everyday life people believe themselves to be constantly changing. In actuality, the changes that one believes to have are but minor changes. A personââ¬â¢s personality is usually set at an early age in childhood. A social psychologist named George Herbert Mead understood society through socialization stems he called social behaviorism. Mead and another psychologist by the name of John B. Watson worked together on this approach. Watson focused on outward behavior in this partnership of ideas. However, Mead emphasized on inward thinking, which he contended was humanityââ¬â¢s defining trait. The back-bone of Meadââ¬â¢s study and the central concept is the self. The self being "A dimension of personality composed of an individualââ¬â¢s self-awareness and self-ima...

Animal Farm, Theme, Tone, Imagery Essay
The theme of ââ¬Å"Animal Farmâ⬠by George Orwell is there are dangers of a naive working class if the abuse of language as instrumental to the abuse of power is applied. For example, on page 31 ââ¬Å"Comrades! You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in selfishness and privilege? Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig. We pigs are brain workers; the organization of the farm totally depends on usâ⬠Squealer cried. This is manipulation of language to make the Animals believe that the pigs should be given the best of the food production. According to Squealer mental work is more exhausting than physical work. This shows manipulation, because Orwell refers back to the Russian Revolution of 1917 when Stalin took over Russia and he didnââ¬â¢t follow Marxââ¬â¢s ideas, as Napoleon didnââ¬â¢t follow the idea of Animalism. Joseph Stalin killed anything in his path and modified the laws to his benefit, as Napoleon did throughout the book. Also, on page 100 the hens are requested to give six hundred eggs a week, and the other animals wore asked to build a windmill and a schoolroom while their food rations are being reduced. Everything in total is mostly for the pigs benefit, as in the schoolroom for the teachings of the young pigs, and the money for the sale of the eggs is making. There are dangers of having a naive working class because, people can be manipulated by the abuse of propaganda. Tone Orwell creates an indignant tone throughout the classic Animal Farm. The indignant tone is shown through out the book, because Orwell feels anger about how unfair the Russian Revolution was and, how naive society can be when people donââ¬â¢t work for rights. In Chapter V, ââ¬Å"At this there was a terrible baying sound outside, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn. They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaws. â⬠According to SparkNotes, Editors, ââ¬Å"These words from Chapter V describe Napoleonââ¬â¢s violent expulsion of Snowball from Animal Farm, which parallels the falling-out between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. As Stalin did, Napoleon prefers to work behind the scenes to build his power by secrecy and deception, while Snowball, as Trotsky did, devote himself to winning popular support through his ideas and his eloquence. â⬠The tone Orwell creates all refers back to the Russian Revolution, Napoleon decided to create his own power ignoring what the real idea of Animalism that Old Major created. Napoleon ignores Animalism, because creates a more of a totalitarian government. He makes himself President when in reality he is a dictator. Orwell shows that he is indignant about Joseph Stalin and how he used to kill people who got in a way of his power, as Napoleon who is really ambitious and kills opponents to his ideas. Imagery Through out the book Animal Farm, George Orwell uses examples of imagery to make a better vivid image to show the readers how unfair the Russian Revolution was. Old Majorââ¬â¢s dream is an example of imagery. Old Majorââ¬â¢s dream is about equality. Old Major tells the other animals that ââ¬Å"Man is the only creature that consumes without producing,â⬠and he encourages them to ââ¬Å"work night and day, body and soul, for the over-throw of the human race. â⬠In short, he explains that men have been taking advantage of them for years, and that itââ¬â¢s time for the tyranny of man to end but, what he is really talking about is rebellion. Majorââ¬â¢s dream is a simplest version of Communist Manifesto; the basic idea of the Manifesto was capitalism was seriously unfair. The workers never saw the products of their labor because the capitalists, the people who owned the means of production claimed the profit for themselves. As in the book, Mr. Jones never showed the animals any affection or appreciation thus the animals for their work. The author used imagery in this occasion because he wanted to portray a negative view of how he attended his farm, and to give him an instant poor reputation because of his usage of alcoholism. Equally imagery was utilized by Orwell in pages 107-108 when a main working class character, Boxer, was being taken away by the Horse Slaughterer. Evidently, the usage of imagery helped to see how the animals responded towards the last seeing of one of their own, and how violent Boxer responded. In brief, all the vivid images Orwell cause was for the caused of the comprehension of how the ones being use by the ones with power are being affected. Imagery in Animal Farm helps the reader have a better idea and comprehension of what allegorically message Orwell is trying to transmit through the animals. Literary Devices Dramatic Irony is used throughout the book, dramatic irony was shown when Squealer and Napoleon persuasive the animals that Boxer died in peace. The death of Boxer shows Dramatic Irony because the reader knows that Boxer didnââ¬â¢t actually die in peace he actually was sent to a Slaughter house to get killed. Squealer tells the animals that the van that came to pick up Boxer was from hasnââ¬â¢t been repainted since the past owners. This is dramatic irony because the van clearly says, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËAlfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler, Willingdon. Dealer in Hides and Bone-Meal. Kennels Supplied. In page 13 and 30 there was a bucket of milk left for the animals to use it in their mash, but once they left one animal stayed behind for some minutes, Napoleon, after the animals came back the milk had disappeared. Dramatic irony was seen and use here because the reader would comprehend how Napoleon actually took the milk for his food and some other pigs too, but wasnââ¬â¢t planning to share it with the rest of the animals in the farm, as it has been proven in page 30 when the animals found out that he actually took the milk. In a brief, page 13 the reader was actually the only one able to understand that Napoleon took the milk while the rest of the animals didnââ¬â¢t have a clue until page 30. Orwell wants the audience to know how the animals are been fooled and brain washed by Sealer and Napoleon and the animals are too naive to understand and see what really is happening. Genre Analysis Animal Far m is an example of an allegory classic; this novel teaches the reader how unfair was the Russian Revolution and what a big impact it had in the 1917-1921. Napoleonââ¬â¢s Initiative represents Stalinââ¬â¢s five year plans, In Animal Farm, Napoleon has the animals working harder than ever. Even the neighboring humans ââ¬Å"had developed a certain respect for the efficiency with which the animals were managing their own affairsâ⬠But the animals are still starving. And just like Stalin, Napoleon uses tricks to ââ¬Å"conceal this fact from the outside worldâ⬠Napoleon sends the sheep out to talk about increased rations and has empty food bins filled with sand, lots of fiber, but unfortunately not too filling. Orwell is trying to teach the reader that society can be really dumb and easy to be manipulated, and people obey those who say they have power because society is too naive to take initiative of their own. The Henââ¬â¢s rebellion represents Stalinââ¬â¢s Great Purge, The hens refuse to give up their eggs; Napoleon starves them; several of the hens die; the rest simply give up. Then, the pigs confess that they were working with Snowball and Mr. Frederick, and a moment later the dogs ââ¬Å"tore their throats outâ⬠And then it happens again, with hens from the rebellion, a goose, and several sheep. Napoleon contradicts himself based on the first seven commandments, ââ¬Å"No animal shall kill another animalâ⬠. Napoleon changes this commandment to ââ¬Å"No animal shall be killed without cause. â⬠Orwell wants the reader to understand that sometimes leaders change laws to their benefit and citizens donââ¬â¢t claim anything against them, because they are too scare to speak u. Animal Farm is a great allegoric novel because it teaches the reader how cruel the world can be when there is not actual equality and society gets intimated by people with power.

The Excellent Consuting Group Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Excellent Consuting Group - Coursework Example The revenue of product X5 was fairly stable but low, while that of X7 was extremely low but exceptionally stable for the year 2011 and would be low up to 2015. Profit Like the revenue performance, X5 and X6 products meet the profit threshold while X7 continue to make losses. It is below bar to a tune of -$31million dollars. Total Income The breakeven point for the three products is determined by the fixed costs, selling price and the number of units sold. The total sales in 2015 reduced compared to sales realized in 2015. Similarly, the total revenue reduced. Since the fixed and R&D costs remained constant, the average profitability reduced from 10% to 4%. X5 income The sales and revenue reduced in 2015 as compared to 2014 showing a great reduction from 3% to 1% profitability. The fixed and R&D costs remained high. X6 income The revenue and sales reduced by almost half in 2015 as compared to 2014. The profits also reduced from 16% to 10%. R&D costs were higher compared to the other p roducts. X7 income This product realized increased revenues since sales went up. In contrast to the other products, variable costs increased while the total profits went up. The product was making losses but well performing when compared to Product X5 and X6. Market Information Sales The sales for product X6 was exceptionally on the rise from the year 2011 and 2013 but gradually reduced from the 2013 to 2015. ... Product Performance X6 is highly performing in the market when compared to X5and X7. However, X5 is reducing in performance while X7 has stable performance. Market Report 2011 X5 Market Report The installed customer base of product X5 shows an increase from 2014 to 2015. The number of remaining customers has reduced while market saturation increased from 37% to 41%. First time customers reduced while repeat sales increased. X6 Market Report The installed customer base of product X6 shows an increase from 2014 to 2015. The number of remaining customers was exhausted while market saturation increased from 90% to 100%. First time customers reduced to zero while repeat sales increased. X7 Market Report The installed customer base of product X7 shows an increase from 2014 to 2015. The number of remaining customers has reduced while market saturation remained at 3%. First time customers and repeat sales increased. Proposed Alternative Strategy Suppose the prices of X5, X6 and X7 products a re set at price $400, $360 and $200 respectively. Also by apportioning the research and development (R&D) allocations as follows; X5(25%), X6(40%), and X7(30%). The cumulative profits for 2012 will be 192,479,522. The X5 is less expensive than other similar products in the market. X6 sales are in the growth phase of the product lifecycle. The majority of X6 customers have not yet purchased the product. The X5 compares more favorably with other tablets in the category. The cumulative profits for 2013 are 463,673, 489. The decisions for 2014 will be effective if X7 handheld is priced higher than competing products and is in the growth phase. There are many X7 customers remaining in the market. Most of the customers for the X7

Target Corporation Supply Chain Managment Research Paper
Target Corporation Supply Chain Managment - Research Paper Example This merchandise is transferred to the regional offices through rail or trucks. The regional offices are responsible for providing merchandise to more than 1700 stores of the company located in different states of US. The effective of Target supply chain is responsible to meet the customers demand, and the company has complete control of its merchandise immediate after the arrival of its shipment (Tirschwell, 2008). Product and Service Specification Product Specification Target being a highest discount retailer is spread in a wide range of products in the utility section. From house hold goods to dry items, from food items to cosmetics there is a big variety of products which Target offers (Target, 2012). Service Specifications Target Corporation being a merger with Associated Merchandising Corporation (AMC) has globalized its service network in discount retail section. In the retail section, Target is divided in three categories of services Target Greatland (shoes and clothing), Tar get stores (utility services) and Super Target (marts). With conventional product line and with advanced value adding methods, Target has retrieved maximum sales potential by such efficient service administration (Target Corporation , 2012). The company has spread in branches where each branch is working as a separate service unit for effective and substantial service management (Target Corporation , 2012). Order Processing and Management Targetââ¬â¢s corporation has advanced order processing methods. CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) is applied in distribution and order processing sections. Maximo is the system which identifies orders on CMMS to send them to different vendors. This is how Target connects from one supply chain function (distribution center) to another (vendors) in a cost effective manner. Maximo carries general order information and order notifications to distribution centers to provide real time service to the customer (Target Corporation , 2012) . Value Delivery Options Target being the highest discount retailer is famous on discounts price offers. With valuable discount offerings, Target is able to win customerââ¬â¢s perception in quite extensive manner, as customers get both things quality and service in high discount rates from Target stores. All such open value delivery options for Target Corporation and make its products and services a top priority in the customerââ¬â¢s perception (Target Corporation , 2012). Procurement Procurement is the starting function of a supply chain process. The larger the company is like Target, the broad is its circle of procurement and vendors (Blanchard, 2010). With the application of EDI software on procurement, Target connects with other merchandisers in a cost effective manner. This is to control and management procurement function and to bring right vendors at the right time of reception. Associations like National Minority Supplier Development Council, National Veteran Owned Bus iness Association or US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce supports target to achieve its diversified supplier and procurement goals. This is how Target settles in vendors system of procurement (Target Corporation, 2012). Inventory Management Inventory management comes at the fifth position of

Finish three finance questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Finish three finance questions - Essay Example The recessionary woes prevalent in the country have adversely affected the business of company. As the recession has taken a strong hit on the manufacturing organizations, so has service sector been affected by it. Although revenue has declined by a meager percentage, the profitability of the company has been slashed down by 73.5% during the same year. The operating expenses have themselves decreased by 2.6% on account of declining revenues and a better allocation of resources by management during the period. Exceptional items occurrence in the operating expenses section have trimmed the profitability. They have increased from a tiny ?4.7 Million in 2008 to ?37.4 Million in 2009 which represents an increase of 687% over the period. Finance costs have also painted a dim picture of profitability increasing by 10.28% during the period from CY08 to CY09. The financial burden was magnified because of an increase in exceptional items occurring in the financial charges table which increase from ?4.2 Million to ?11.9 Million. Income taxes paid during the year decreased by 65.3% with the credit going to the inverse effect of exception items on the taxable income. In a nutshell, if we exclude the effects of exceptional items, the profitability has only shrunk by 20%. ... High gross margins of the company depict that the company is operating in service industry. Operating margins have decreased from a hefty 23.6% in CY08 to 17.6% in CY09. Increase in operating expenses has caused the company to bear the brunt of falling profitability. Operating expenses have increased by 8.38% during the calendar year. Incorporating the effect of exceptional items show that operating margins have only declined from 24.3% in CY08 to 22.8% in CY09. The explanation can be attributed to the ground that the company has incurred ?37 million additional in exceptional items under the operating expenses table. Hence, we expect that the future of the company will remain upbeat as these exceptional items will have a limited affect on future operations. Net Profit Margin of Marston group has squeezed from 9.3% in CY08 to 2.5% in CY09. Again, exceptional items are the main culprit to such a large decline in margins. Financial costs have jumped up by 10.3% during the period on acco unt of increasing exceptional items incurred within the financial charges category. Efficiency Analysis Asset turnover ratio decreased from 0.27 in CY08 to 0.265 in CY09. This implies that the company is generating ?0.265 in revenues for every ?1 in its assets. This decline is a result of squeezing out of revenues in FY09, although the impact has also been mitigated by a slight decrease in assets from ?2465.9 to ?2431.3 in CY09. Trade receivables day outstanding has increased from 41 days in CY08 to 45 days in CY09 which implies that receivables are being collected in a higher number of days in the previous year, thus marking a negative sign on efficiency of the company. As the organization is not a manufacturing concern,

FINANCIAL MARKET AND PRODUCT RISK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
FINANCIAL MARKET AND PRODUCT RISK - Essay Example The two of the stylized financial asset pricing model is Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Arbitrage Pricing theory (APT). The paper will be focusing on the critical evaluation of these two asset pricing models and will be analyzing the justification of its use with that of a fund manager in the United Kingdom. Let us begin our discussion with the notion of these two models before plunging into their critical evaluation. Mechanics of CAPM The capital asset pricing model (CAPM) developed by Sharp (1964), Linter (1965) and Mossin (1966) (Zhang & Wihlborg, 2004, p.1) assumes that stock returns are usually evolved from one factor model which represents the market portfolio of all the risky assets. The theory is structured on the notion that it is an aggregation of the Portfolio theory and some additional ones. In the CAPM model, the concept of risk free asset resulted in the derivation of Capital Market Line which is referred to as the new efficient frontier. The equation for the CA PM model can be stated as follows: is the required rate of return on a risky asset and it is a function of risk free rate and risk premium . The market risk premium is the difference between the return on the market and the risk free return. is crucial as it determines the sensitivity of the stock market to that of the market which shows by what amount the price of a stock will fluctuate in specific fluctuations to that of the stock market (Zubairi et al, 2011, p.441). But the critical point in the estimation of the CAPM. The model assumes that the return on a stock is dependent on whether the price of the stock follows the prices in the market as a whole. It is useful as it represents a statistical representation of the past risk. Although there is no certainty but a high probability will be attached to infer the statement that the companies which strong stock price history will also performs in the future. The critical point in the estimation of the CAPM is the difficulty of measu ring the true market portfolio (Donovan, 2007, p.3). The APT theory is a modified version of CAPM which is discussed in the following segment. Mechanics of APT Developed by Ross (1976) APT states that a large number of sources for risk are present in the economy which cannot be eliminated by the process of diversification (Iqbal & Haider, 2005, p. 121). The risks are thought to be of the factors like inflation, output fluctuations, fiscal and monetary shocks. APT is modified than CAPM in the sense that it focuses on the measurement of a large number of Betas () than a single Beta which was calculated in CAPM model. The Betas are calculated by the estimation of the sensitivity of the return of the assets with respect to change in each factor. It possesses a linear relationship between the returns on risky assets and a small set of economy wide common factor. The equation is given as follows: Here, is the expected return of the ith stock. Fj represent the unobserved economic factors a nd bij represent the sensitivity of the security i to that of the economic factors j and ?I is the stochastic parameter known as the uncontrolled factor (Donovan, 2007, p.3). Now let us analyze which model a fund manager sitting in the UK will be adapting. Characteristics of the shares traded in the London Stock exchange The companies whose shares are traded in the London Stock Exchange vary largely where the smallest companies are valued

As the world becomes increasingly polarised where social issues Essay
As the world becomes increasingly polarised where social issues seemingly get lost, how can we encourage future technology and design to engage and augment our future - Essay Example This paper will explore the issue in depth and highlight the application of technology to ceramic design. After the Second World War, the globe experienced a social and economic recession that instilled hopelessness in majority of them. However, modernism emerged, promising to present the glob with hope despite the hardships. The ideologies that defined modernism seemed to be promising a palpable pattern of social responsibility. In the opinion of many, modernism had the capacity to induce change in the living conditions of the people. Therefore, embracing modernism translated to changes in different sectors. In the years that followed, the globe saw technological innovations in agriculture, economy, medicine, and media. In agriculture, technology has registered numerous changes. High levels of mechanization have increased the rates of production in agriculture. As expected, mechanization and forms of technology in agriculture have served to provide enough for the growing population. Sadly though, there are two sides of the inside story (Lee, 2008:61). Whereas some nations have more than they need, the developing world has to rely on support from the developed world. Reports indicate that Europe and America waste food products that could suffice to feed the entire developing world. While some wastage occurs unavoidably during production, a high percentage of wasted agricultural products occur deliberately accounting for about 60 %. The current trends in agricultural production reveal that the developing world only gets wealthier while third world countries remain in ardent poverty. In order to address the challenges of some nations, biotechnology seemed to provide a solution through the development of genetically modified organisms. At first, this technology presented a viable solution to pests, diseases and unfavorable climatic conditions because genetic engineering provided crops with the capacity to withstand all these.

A play written by J. B. Priestly Essay Example for Free
A play written by J. B. Priestly Essay An Inspector Calls, a play written by J. B. Priestly in 1945. He set his play in 1912 just before the First World War. It is a story of the visit by an Inspector to an apparently normal family, the Birlings. The Birlings are celebrating their daughter Shelias engagement to Gerald Croft. Mr. Birling a successful factory owner gets the ball rolling with a speech, which he gives to his son Eric, and Gerald Croft. J. B Priestly makes good use of dramatic irony in this speech because many events took place after 1912, which we the modern audience, know about but Mr. Birling doesnt. Mr. Birling mentioned that the miners came out on a strike and there would be possible labour trouble in the near future. He said that there wouldnt be any more worries about the strikes. But in 1926 we know that there was a General Strike in Britain. He talks about the Titanic being a spectacular ship with every luxury and it is absolutely unsinkable. But as we know in 1912 the Titanic sunk on maiden voyage and 1,513 lives were lost. He also mentioned about the wars not happening. He said that the Germans dont want war. But in 1914 the First World War broke out. He said that there would peace and prosperity and rapid progress everywhere but in 1917 there was revolution in Russia. In 1939 the Second World War broke out and in 1945 the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. This makes the audience doubt Mr Birling early on in the play. When Mr. Birling finishes his speech the Inspector enters into the scene. The Inspector is at the Birlings because there was a death of a woman Eva Smith and he had come to ask questions about her. Mr. Birling was the first person that we were led to believe started off the train of events that ultimately led to the death of Eva Smith. Mr. Birling had sacked Eva Smith from his factory after she started to cause trouble demanding higher wages. Mr Birling says that any man in his position would have done the same. She was making trouble as Mr. Birling said, She had a lot to say far too much so she had to goi. But the only thing that Mr. Birling cared about was his family and the progress of his business. He didnt care about his workers and he didnt know them. As he says in Act 1 I have a couple of hundred workers under me, who keep changing. So there wasnt a personal relationship between these two until after the workers came back from their holidays that they were asking for a pay rise. As Mr. Birling wouldnt, he sacked the ringleaders and one of them was Eva Smith. Now that Eva was sacked she was out of work for two months. She had no money and she was half starved. She had no one to help her. Her parents had died so they couldnt offer any help and her friends had nothing to offer her. But then again it wasnt the end of the world and she was capable of getting another job as we find out.

System Logs Network Level Logs for windows and Linux
System Logs Network Level Logs for windows and Linux ABSTRACT- WWW is broadly utilized by individuals for accessing services like social media, watching videos, accessing various information from different websites. Every one of these exercises are tracked or traced in different types of log files. Henceforth log records are to a great degree helpful in understanding client behavior, Improving server performance, and intrusion detection and so on. In this research paper, we concentrate on performance of snort by utilizing optimized log pattern versus conventional log pattern. My paper concentrates on system logs network level logs for windows and Linux. In this paper we are attempting to use a fast pattern matching algorithm to be used for better researching for Snort IDS. In this way snort IDS can provide very fast detection rate. Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) provide an important security function to help defend against network attacks. As network speeds up and detection workloads increments, it is critical for NIDSes to be highl y proficient. Most NIDSes need to check for a large number of known attack patterns in each packet, thus making the pattern matching very expensive part of signature based NIDSes in processing and memory assets. This paper presents another algorithm for pattern matching customized specifically for interruption detection. Introduction- Interruption Detection addresses a scope of innovations that are involved in the detection and reporting network and system security occasions. Many times, individuals have proposed a few adept definitions for Intrusion detection and Intrusion Prevention systems. An IDS is an alarming system that watches data stream at various points in the network, giving cautions and alerts on suspect or malevolent activity. While an IDA just alarms the administrator on discovery of malicious activity, it might be additionally help to keep them from re-occurring. This leads us to the idea of Intrusion Prevention system. An Intrusion Prevention System, is a system with a proactive strategy for distinguishing and averting noxious movement, yet permits administrator to perform activity after being cautioned. Both IDS and IPS require pattern matching capabilities with a given set of rules which work in real-time at a constant high speed. Log analysis is basically an art and science trying to make some kind of sense out computer created records (likewise called log or audit trail records). The way toward making such records is called data logging. Reasons why individuals perform log Analysis are: Compliance with security policies. Compliance with review or control. System investigating. Forensics (amid examinations or in response of subpoena) Security occurrence response. Logs are discharged by networking devices, Operating Systems, Applications and in all manner of shrewd or programmable computing devices. A flood of messages in time-sequence includes a log. Logs might be files and documents and are stored on disk, or guided as a network stream to a log gatherer. Log messages should be translated with respect to the sources internal state (e.g., application) and report security-significant or operations-pertinent event (e.g. a client login, or a system errors). Logs are frequently made by programming engineers to help in the troubleshooting of the operation of an application. The language structure and semantics of data inside log messages are generally application or seller specific. terminology may likewise shift; for instance, the authentication of a user to an application might be described as a login, a logon, a client connection or validation event. Consequently, log analysis must translate messages in context of an application, vendor, system or configuration with a specific end goal to make valuable correlations with messages from various log sources. Log message format/content may not generally be completely documented. An errand of the log analysis is to actuate the system to discharge the full range of messages with a specific end goal to comprehend the entire domain from which the messages must be deciphered. A log analyst may outline terminology from various log sources into a uniform, standardized phrasing so that reports and statistics can be explained from a heterogeneous situation. For instance, log messages from Windows, Unix, firewalls, databases might be accumulated into a standardized report for the evaluator. Diverse systems may flag distinctive message priorities with an alternate vocabulary, for example, error and warning versus fail, caution, and critical. However proficient log examination is essential. Henceforth in our proposed system, we are utilizing a productive and fast pattern matching algorithm with SNORT.

Man of La Mancha :: essays research papers
"Facts are the enemy of truth!" cries Don Quixote de la Mancha. And I wonder, is this the madness of Quixote or Cervantes's inspiration? Can facts really be truth's enemy? Facts aren't adequate to explain how irrational perfection lies at the root of imperfect Aldonza. Facts have always misled us. For history and science, facts are used at all times. Yet in both areas, unprocessed facts are truth's enemy. Facts taken at face value deceive us every time. In the end, Quixote's family hauls him in and subjects him to the cure. When they force him to accept the obvious facts, it kills him. Aldonza approaches his deathbed. In his defeat, Quixote calls her Aldonza. "No," she says, "my name is Dulcinea!" She has, at last, found the truth -- the perfection -- that contradicts the facts. If Quixote's madness didn't redeem him, it did, at least, redeem her. Throughout the O.J. Simpson Case of 1991, his lawyers were attempting to convince people, most importantly the jury, that by conjuring facts which created doubts in the minds of the people, and hence concealed the truth about what happened. Fahrenheit 9/11 or Iraq War. Facts are part of the truth, but not its whole. Fact is always limited; itââ¬â¢s a piece of information about something. Fact is a small division of truth as interpreted by an individual. The truth emerges when there is the clear vision to see facts with their proper weight and place. It can take much research and fact-checking to determine what the facts are. It's not easy to sort out what is real and what is not. Being fully informed on every important issue is impossible; all one can do is their best with the time, resources, and inclinations they have. However, even if one has time to read extensively, it's not always possible to conclusively know the facts in the middle of the "he said, she said" of politics. In the face of contradictory versions of events, for example, whose version do we trust? We weren't there, after all. We often end up just believing what we want to believe, what fits with our views and is palatable to us. It's important to keep an open mind and recognize when we don't have enough information to be certain of the facts. Pg. 11. Taken out of context, almost anything a person does or says can be made to look bad or good.
An Analysis of Shakespeares Othello Essay -- Othello Essays
ââ¬Å"Think on thy sinsâ⬠(5.2.43) he says, ââ¬Å"They are loves I bear to youâ⬠(5.2.44) I respond. ââ¬Å"Ay, and for that thou diestâ⬠(5.2.45). There is no pleading with my lord, his once amorous filled eyes are now brimming with anger, and anguish. This whole conversation has turned my mind into mush. How can he think that I would ever love Cassio? Is it not plain that he, Othello, is my lord and the only object of my affection? Does it not matter? I think it doesnââ¬â¢t. Othelloââ¬â¢s whole body is shaking (5.2.50) and his eyes are rolling (5.2.41), these signs do not bode well for my life. Worse yet, he has already had Cassio killed. ââ¬Å"Oh, banish me, my lord, kill me not!â⬠(5.2.88) I beg, ââ¬Å"Down, Strumpet,â⬠he is undeterred (5.2.89). ââ¬Å"It is too lateâ⬠(5.2.95). I am not sure if I thought that, or if Othello said it. Either way, it is too late. His strong, calloused fingers are clutching my throat, violently squeezing unt il all of the air leaves my lungs. Spots- I see spots. Brightly colored yellow, red and blue spots. The spots grow and take shape. Images and scenes from my life are passing before my eyes, and then it hits me. ââ¬Å"O, falsely, falsely murdered!â⬠I cry (5.2.126). Emilia is here, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ Sweet Desdemona, O sweet mistress, speak!â⬠she begs (5.2.131). I must tell her, ââ¬Å"A guiltless death I dieâ⬠(5.2.132). ââ¬Å"O, who hath done this deed?â⬠Emilia inquires (5.2.133). She has to know the truth, ââ¬Å"Nobody, I myself. Farewell. Commend me to my kind lord. O, farewellâ⬠(5.2.134-135). As the saying goes, hindsight is always twenty-twenty. For Desdemona, this is especially true. Desdemona was innocent and naà ¯ve to a fault. Her determination to mend the relationship between Cassio and Othello, only served to nourish the seed of doubt that was planted in Othelloââ¬â¢... ... the light of heaven I know not how I lost himâ⬠(4.2.152-153). Once Iago planted the seed, created the story and showed Othello that Cassio had the Handkerchief, Desdemona was rendered guilty. It did not matter how much Desdemona protested, or denied the story, Iagoââ¬â¢s reputation as an honest man superseded Desdemonaââ¬â¢s reputation as a woman who, according to Iago, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦so young could give out such seeming, to seel her fatherââ¬â¢s eyes up close as oak, he thought ââ¬Ëtwas witchcraftâ⬠(3.3.213-215). Desdemonaââ¬â¢s final line in the play shows that she believes she was responsible for her own death. In truth, however, the only sin Desdemona ever committed was bearing loves to the moor of Venice. Alumni Tracer System
The Alumni tracer is a System that even they are far from the schools, the schools can communicate with the graduate students and to know more about their experiences and their careers after finished their studies. Technology is a tool and method used in solving problems and to make the work easier. In our modern generation, almost everything around us is made-up of technology and the most developed gadget in our generation is the computer wherein almost everyone needs it. Students, Teacher, or even a simple user can do anything they want in computers. It can make to help us to make our work easier and faster. Every schools-universities or institutions are using computers. Some of schools wants to remember all those person who have been part of their society, thatââ¬â¢s why they want to know if the students from their school has a capability to compete their knowledge or skills to everyone and they want to know more about the students who are already graduated. College has always placed great emphasis on the importance of maintaining a close rapport with its alumni. In order to build and enhance the alumni network, the Alumni Affairs Office was established to act as an intermediary platform in bridging the gap between the College and its vast alumni members. It actively plays its role in maintaining a good relationship between the alumni and College as well as extending dynamic network between alumni from various School of Studies. The Alumni Affairs Office also plays an integral part in organizing various homecomings, thus effectively keeping the communication channel between the College and its alumni open, providing countless opportunities for its alumni in strengthening its networking ties and forging an everlasting bond of fellowship. Thus the researchers came up with an idea of creating an online alumni tracer. The Alumni Tracer is being used by several schools to conduct significant feedback, to reconnect graduates to their alma mater and to know the demographic profile of the employment record of the respondents. Several schools in the Philippines nowadays have been using it and integrate it through their official websites and/or alumni associationââ¬â¢s page.
