Hamlet Moral Philosophy Essay
Throughout Hamlet there is a moral conflict in regards to suicide. As the events of the play unfold Hamlet finds himself pondering whether or not life is worth living in such a decrepit world. Uncertainty keeps Hamlet from ending the pain of life, as well as his desire for revenge on Claudius. Periodically throughout the play Hamlet stops to contemplate his mortality and ending his life. Hamlet does this in his soliloquies, often about whatever event is happening right then as well as, as is his melancholic nature, thinking about whether life is worth living. In the famous ââ¬Å"to be, or not to beâ⬠(3.1.56) speech, Hamlet is literally weighing the options between to be, or to live, or not to be, to die, and in the end he finds that the uncertainty of death makes ââ¬Å"calamity of so long lifeâ⬠(3.1.69). Speeches like this and others throughout the play are prompted by Hamletââ¬â¢s distress at all of the conflicts going on around him. These speeches are Hamletââ¬â¢s innermost thoughts and so are intended for Hamlet as they are his reflection on the moral conflict he is facing. Hamletââ¬â¢s soliloquies reflect his inner conflict as he reflects upon whether or not he should end his life and his suffering or live and continue to suffer through his pain. In Hamletââ¬â¢s soliloquy in Act 3 Scene 1, or the ââ¬Å"to be, or not to beâ⬠speech, Hamlet uses various rhetorical techniques to judge whether he should live or die. He uses imagery in this speech such as ââ¬Å"The oppressorââ¬â¢s wrong, the proud manââ¬â¢s contumelyâ⬠(3.1.71) to illustrate the pains which may be felt in the sleep of death which he is considering. Hamlet also uses repetition throughout the speech to emphasize his conflict between life and death, particular in reference to sleep as he says ââ¬Å"To die, to sleepâ⬠(3.1.60&64), he does this to highlight his uncertainty at the idea of death, or what may be lurking thereafter, ââ¬Å"what dreams may comeâ⬠(3.1.66). Hamletââ¬â¢s perspective on this moral conflict changes as he finds purpose in his revenge against Claudius and begins to see his plan come to fruition. In the beginning of the play, Hamlet seems to be contemplating suicide whereas at the end, Hamlet wants to live to see his revenge against Claudius completed.

Limit on Sale of Second Homes
Today the South West is seen as a hotspot or retreat for all age groups. Its beautiful landscapes and popular coastline mean that many people are regularly visiting Cornwall, leading into them buying second homes. However these outsiders are pushing locals away and this is why I propose councils enforce a limit on the sale of second home properties in popular areas. With so many people interested in second homes the property market is booming and prices are continuing to increase, between 2001 and 2004 in the town of Padstow property prices rose by 144% (from Halifax survey). With this in mind locals are trying to invest in property before it becomes too expensive, yet so are outsiders who are willing and more able to pay more as they still have 10% discount on council tax. Second home owners used to only have to pay 50% of council tax yet this was then raised to 90% in order to help support local projects. This situation is having a terrible effect on local people. Higher prices and higher taxes have to be paid which some cannot afford, resulting in people having to move away from their local area in order to stay financially stable. This then leaves another home on the market that is more likely to become a second home. In the small fishing village of Port Isaac, now well known as the setting for television show Doc Martin, ITV, staggeringly 75% of the properties are second homes. This causes a number of seasonal problems. During the summer roads become busy and dangerous, beaches full, environment damagedâ⬠¦what can only be described as a mere hell for locals. ââ¬Å"I had to pay à ¯Ã ¿Ã ½4 to park in Polzeathâ⬠complained a local surfer. Also during the evenings tourist children have been a persistent problem in Polzeath. Students coming down for the summer to stay in their family or friends second homes are found congregated on the road and beach drinking, shouting and vandalising property, and this is on a nightly basis. To solve the problem nine police officers were stationed at Polzeath to patrol the evenings yet this was a waste of money and very annoying for local youths ââ¬Å"When we wanted to hang out we would have to stand in a spotlighted area that the police had allocated, just because others were causing troubleâ⬠said a teenager from Polzeath. However when winter settles in they all return north leaving towns like Port Isaac and Polzeath to appear as ââ¬Ëghost towns' . This then leaves local businesses with no option but to close up for the winter which also leaves locals unemployed and it can be very hard to find a job for the winter. As soon as winter comes the local teens are left with the town to themselves and not much to do. Most travel to Wadebridge, which is about fifteen minutes away, to work and to meet up with friends in town. Recently ââ¬Å"Tube Stationâ⬠was built in Polzeath, a half pipe for skaters of Polzeath and the surrounding area to use and also for other teens to just hang out. This is why I think a limit on the sale of second homes in popular areas should be enforced. It would help by; firstly less second homes means more local homes at affordable prices, also larger population numbers would be maintained throughout the year and furthermore businesses would be able to have a longer season and provide jobs through the winterâ⬠¦ And with all this gained we still don't loose our biggest input from tourism that helps keep our economy going. I'm not saying we stop the sale of second homes as we then would have a major fall in our economy but if we limit the number of second homes available locals will have a better lifestyle which they are entitled to and outsiders will still have the option to move here. Limiting second homes in popular areas also gives the chance to then develop housing in small areas for permanent residents but also second home owners and overall improve the economy of the South West.

Heart and Conscience in Mark Twainââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅAdventures of Huckleberry Finnââ¬Â Essay
Mark Twain considered his novel ââ¬Å"Adventures of Huckleberry Finnâ⬠as ââ¬Å"a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat.â⬠à This claim is valid, as the story showed the title character in several situations wherein he was bothered by his conscience yet he chose to act according to his emotions.à Indeed, the book ââ¬Å"Adventures of Huckleberry Finnâ⬠exhibits the triumph of the heart over a conscience. In the book, there are three major instances wherein there was conflict between the heart and the conscience.à In these situations, the conflict was caused by the issue of slavery as Huck was often forced to choose between his heart and conscience when it came to matters concerning the black slave Jim. The first instance is found in Chapter XVI, when Huck was disturbed by his conscience about assisting Jim in his escape.à Huck was deeply bothered by the fact that while he was not responsible for the escape itself, he did not do anything to prevent it.à He was most concerned about Miss Watson, who was Jimââ¬â¢s owner.à Huck is guilty because he let her slave run away from her when she was nothing but nice to him.à In the beginning, it seemed like his conscience has won because he finally resolved to disclose Jimââ¬â¢s whereabouts. However, he changed his mind at the last minute.à Jim called Huck his only friend and the only white man who kept his promise.à Huck said, ââ¬Å"I was paddling off, all in a sweat to tell on him; but when he says this, it seemed to kind of take the tuck all out of meâ⬠(Twain).à Jimââ¬â¢s words appealed to Huckââ¬â¢s emotions, and the latterââ¬â¢s feelings prevented him from doing what his conscience told him to do.à Hence, the heart succeeds over the conscience for the first time. The second instance again finds Huck struggling between telling others about Jim and keeping his escape a secret.à The conflict between the heart and conscience continues in Chapter XVI as Huck encounters a boat with two men in search of escaped slaves.à The men asked Huck if the man he was with was white or black. Huck clearly wanted to expose Jim as his conscience intended him to do, but he ended up lying to hide the slave.à After the men left, Huck mused: ââ¬Å"sââ¬â¢pose youââ¬â¢d a done right and give Jim up, would you feel better than what you do now? No, says I, Iââ¬â¢d feel badâ⬠(Twain).à In the end, it became obvious that Huckââ¬â¢s decision was a result of his feelings.à He did not choose to do the right thing because he would feel bad about it.à Again, the heart prevails over the conscience. The third and last instance in Chapter XXXI proved to be the most significant, as Huck finally gave up listening to his conscience and resolved to follow his heart.à Because he had been bothered by conscience for awhile, Huck decided to do what he thought was right and write a letter telling Miss Watson of Jimââ¬â¢s whereabouts. After he wrote the letter, Huck thought of Jimââ¬â¢s kindness towards him.à As he held the paper, Huck said: ââ¬Å"I was a-trembling, because Iââ¬â¢d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed itâ⬠(Twain).à In the end, Huck tore up the letter and even considered liberating Jim from slavery in the future.à Huck said, ââ¬Å"All right, then, Iââ¬â¢ll GO to hell!â⬠(Twain).à The conscience dictates that it was a sin to keep a slave away from its owner.à However, Huck preferred to sin and go to hell rather than betray his friend.à Thus, the heart finally wins over the conscience. In Mark Twainââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,â⬠there exists the conflict between the heart and the conscience.à In three instances in the story, the title character disregards his conscience by letting his emotions influence his decisions.à In the end, the heart is victorious over the conscience as Huck chose the former to dictate his actions. Negative feedback mechanisms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Negative feedback mechanisms - Essay Example What are the negative feedback mechanisms and why are they important to health.Answer: The negative feedback mechanisms of a living organism are the mechanisms that reduce or suppress the original stimulus, given the effectorââ¬â¢s output.Thermoregulation, osmoregulation and glucoregulation are few examples of negative feedback mechanisms. The importance of negative feed back mechanisms is that they provide a negative feedback loop to keep conditions of a living organism within tolerable limits and to prevent it from a sudden severe changes.Negative feedback decreases the deviation from an ideal normal value, and is important in maintaining homeostasis. Most endocrine glands are under the control of negative feedback mechanisms (Scanlon & Sanders, 2003, pp. 8-11).Question # 2.i Explain what happens when an ATOM becomes an ION.Answer: Generally an atom has a neutral status due to the fact that the number of protons in the nucleolus are equal to the number of electrons revolving around that atomââ¬â¢s nucleus. Nevertheless some times it happens that due to some external factors an atom or a group of atoms undergoes either an efficiency or deficiency of one or more electrons hence a positive or negative charge appears on an atom. This positive or negative charge caring entity is termed as an ion. ii: Name two cations and two anions found in body fluids. Give the correct notation and name for each ion.... base balance. They also work as a counter flow for sodium's function in nerve transmission in a nerve net work and as an activator for several enzyme systems (Weber, 2007, para. 1-14). Question # 3.i. Briefly describe the three ways by which the bacterial infections are transmission. Answer: Bacteria are microorganisms that live everywhere in our environment. Like many other microorganisms, most of bacteria are pathogenic and are likely to cause disease. Given the right circumstances, they cause infection, such as when transmitted to an immunocompromised host. Bacterial infections are transmitted by following three ways (Introduction to Infection Prevention, n. d., pp. 6-7). 1. When the bacteria come in contact with bare skin. 2. When the bacteria come in contact with mucous membranes or no intact skin, 3. When the bacteria come in contact with normally sterile body sites ii. How could shaking out soiled bed-linen increase transmission of infectious diseases within a ward Answer: There have been few recent studies demonstrating a definitive association between the transmissions of infections diseases due to shaking out soiled bed-linen and the ventilation of buildings. There is strong and sufficient evidence to demonstrate the association between ventilation, air movements in buildings and the transmission/spread of infectious diseases such as measles, tuberculosis, chickenpox, influenza, smallpox and SARS. The transmission of infectious diseases occur due to fact that there a number of microorganism that can survive can multiply in within poor indoor air quality. Question # 4: Some bacteria produce bacterial endospores. Why does this makes infection control more

Supply and demand Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Supply and demand - Essay Example Logically, this will ensure maintenance in the revenues. It is evident that elastic demand is dependent on sensitive buyers compared to inelastic demand all influencing shifts in the quantity of units consumed. Cross price elasticity of demand ensues when the unit prices of a certain good escalate thus forcing an increment on the demand for a different product (Anderson, 2006).CPEoD= (%Ãâ. Therefore, CPEoD affects demand of substitutes since an increment in the price of a product (x), leads to increment for the product Yââ¬â¢s price, its substitute. CPEoD influences complementary goods on the basis that an increment or decrement in the demand of one product equally affects the other since they are consumed together (Benassy, 2008). Substitute goods refer to products whose utility supplements the function of another product. For instance, one can substitute tea with coffee. Therefore, increase in tea price while the price of coffee is constant results to high demand of coffee (Anderson, 2006). On the other hand, complements are goods that are not necessary and therefore, increase in their price leads to low demand. For instance, dà ©cor and design, which enhances serene of a place, amount to complementary goods (Benassy, 2008). Income elasticity of productsââ¬â¢ demand measures the relationship that exists between change in quantity of demand and income change. A rise of income leads to increase in demand of certain products or vice versa. Normal goods always bring a positive elasticity of demand therefore, as income rises, demand also increases (Anderson, 2006). On the other hand, inferior goods results in a negative income of elasticity of product demand. Demand decreases as income increases. The availability of substitute product is the most determinant of cost elasticity of demand. The more goods and services have better substitutes, the more the demand is elastic for those goods and services. For instance, an increment in coffee prices
Madison federalist 10 and 51 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Madison federalist 10 and 51 - Essay Example Such tendencies can have far-reaching repercussions in a human society because a specific group that commands the majority may try to exercise arbitrary control over the minority, favoring one class or faction and exploiting the others. Therefore, it becomes imperative on the government to have some system in place to control the damage caused by such factions. It is with this view that the constitution has been created. Thus one can argue that the constitution is designed to prevent the tyranny of the majority and to protect the rights of the minority. The Federalist Papers is a treatise on free government in peace and security, and written in support of the ratification of the Constitution. The Federalist Papers is written and compiled by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison under the pseudonym of ââ¬Å"publiusâ⬠. Madison believes that there are two ways to control a faction; one is to remove its causes and the second is to control its effects. He wishes to multiply the deposits of political power in the state itself sufficiently, to break down the sole dualism of rich and poor, and thus to guarantee both liberty and security. In Federalist 10, Madison predicts that the size of the United States and its variety of interests could be made a guarantee of stability and justice under the New Constitution. A verity of interest precludes forming of factions and the New Constitution, by safeguarding the interests of all parties irrespective of race, class or regional preferences, guarantees equality. In Federal 51, Madison holds that to ensure liberty to all, each branch should be, for the most part, independent and no one branch should have too much power in selecting members of the other branch. Madison also suggests that the best security against a gradual concentration of power in any one branch is to provide constitutional safeguards that would render such concentration difficult. Madison also observes that dividing power checks concentration of power

A History of American Currency Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
A History of American Currency - Essay Example The specific paper focuses on the presentation of the history of currency in America for the years 1000 up to 1877; however not sufficient information exists for the whole period mentioned above. More specifically, America is a continent the history of which is clearly known only after a particular point of time: the establishment of the first colonies in various regions across the continent. Before the specific period of time just a few hypotheses can be made regarding the currency (referring to the various ââ¬Ëmeansââ¬â¢ of exchanging goods of a specific value) used by natives, especially Indians in their daily transactions. After the entrance of people from Europe (especially English but also Spanish and French) in America, a specific monetary system began to be created in the continent; this system had many of the characteristics of the one used previously by Indians while several changes were made (in accordance with the economy of the colonists involved) in order for the various transactions with the mother ââ¬â country to be completed successfully. The reference specifically to England when describing the monetary history of America is unavoidable; the specific country represented the majority of people that entered America and for this reason the monetary system of England has been considered to be the basis for the American economy ââ¬â although it was rather a gradual development. As for natives (Indians or Amerindians) they gradually lost their right to intervene in the financial development of their region and had to be adapted to the new monetary standards implemented by colonists. In this context, the monetary history of America (referring to the currency in its form that is similar with its current one) could be regarded as beginning in the 17th century. Regarding this issue, it is noticed by Delage et al. (1993, 141) that ââ¬Ëin the years that followed 1650 the Amerindians found themselves losing control of their
